GPU and motherboard warranty stats from Digitec

One of the biggest PC hardware retailer from Switzerland shows the statistics from their warranty claims.

Every graphics card life eventually comes to an end. The vast majority of graphics cards will be replaced by something faster, but the few percent will return to manufacturer for necessary repairs, if they can be fixed at all.

Digitec share their warranty statistics based on at least 300 graphics cards sold and returned under the warranty withing a 2-year period. As everyone knows a lot had happened in the past 2 years, such as the cryptomining boom. That said, these statistics may not be the perfect representation of what other retailers or customers might have experienced.

According to the data, the graphics card maker with the lowest risk of defects is Dell. This company has a portfolio of workstation and professional GPU solutions that cost more and have better build quality. Such cards do not use complicated custom cooling solutions and are not factory-overclocked. This undoubtedly contributes to lower warranty claims.

Interestingly, the GPU newcomer ASRock appears to have a very low number of claims, only 0.3%. Out of 17 brands, the highest defect rate is reported for Sapphire and XFX, both are AMD-exclusive brands. On the other hand, Sapphire has the quickest warranty case duration. Customers typically see 3 day processing time for their claims, whereas all other brands need at least a week and sometimes even two.

The retailer also has data for the motherboards. It appears that statistically speaking motherboard are more likely to be returned for warranty, with some brands (SuperMicro) going up to 5% defect rate, however it is no less than 2.8% for other brands. According to the data, the least defective brand is MSI, but it will take less time to process the claim if Biostar or Gigabyte boards were returned for repairs.

The data cannot be extrapolated to all regions, as some countries have shorter warranty periods and local laws can apply forcing retailers to process the claims faster. In case you want to see the data yourself, you must visit any of the product pages and scroll down to the warranty section.
