Over all, a good buy and definitely worth the money.
Now for an Amazon rant. I ordered this just 14 days ago and today it is $100 less than what I paid. Guess what, Amazon says pack it up, return it, and order it again. Are you kidding me?? It took HOURS to get this in place, hooked up, and dialed in for our home listening preferences. So, this is my last Amazon order. I'm sad the charity I support will no longer get the smile donations from my shopping.
The receiver worked great and sounded great... for ~24 hours before it "popped" and displayed a "NG" error then would not do anything.
Upon reading the manual and online documentation, the "NG" errors are fatal. The popping was an internal component blowing.
I checked all the wiring, everything was inserted properly and not touching each other or anything .
As my previous receiver was an Onkyo and I never had issues for the decade I used it, I've ordered another one hoping this is a one-off.
While this is upsetting, the worst part is, Amazon is refusing to expedite shipping so I will be without a receiver, on my time off recovering from surgery, until Friday, (it's now Tuesday morning). I may cancel and order elsewhere due to this. If I keep the order through Amazon, I will update this review in a bit after seeing how the replacement does.
PS: I paid straight up for a new one, choosing to be refunded for the dead one, rather than going the replacement route so they do not need to wait to receive the dead one before they ship the new one, to ensure the fastest possible receipt of the new unit.
The sound quality is good if you don't use the included microphone as all my measurements were completely wrong and it sounded like built-in tv speakers when used. Resetting the collected information with the correct measurements and some tweaking made it sound as good as the older Yamaha it replaced.
I have to question the quality and engineering of this product as mine just has too many problems for the money I spent on it. I seriously doubt that I would consider another Onkyo product unless they agreed to replace this with one without so many problems and work-arounds.
My Denon and older Yamaha didn't have these problems. I am not happy.
Update: There was an update to the firmware which has improved the system's available setting screen which is now working (at least for now) so I am adding one star. I have the units sound better by manually making the adjustments. I would say that I am happier, but honestly this product should have been launched when it was fully tested and ready for consumers.
Update 2, one out of ten times that I use it, the sound doesn't come on so I have to turn it off, then back on to get the sound to operate. Seriously the unit I have is not good. I'm thinking about going back to my old Yamaha. I am VERY dissatisfied and I can't afford to replace this for a while. Shame on Onkyo for making this poor quality of Home Theater Receiver.
Update 3: This Home Theater Receiver continues to disappoint me. The sound is satisfactory if I manually input the speaker distances but the screen and sound doesn't work for me most of the time. I recently moved an older receiver from Sony into the same place and it sounded just as good as this Onkyo HTR. Since it costs much more, I can't recommend this receiver at all. Onkyo support doesn't seem to want to support this product any longer.
This will be my last product from Onkyo since I feel this is simply inferior to Sony and Yamaha products. I am very unhappy!
